Practice
Through her work as an intern and trainee lawyer with Wong Alliance since 2020, together with her experience across the judiciary, public institutions, and the development sector, Ana has developed a multidisciplinary perspective and a practical understanding of Timor-Leste’s legal and institutional landscape.
Education and academic distinction
Ana Hula Muda graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the National University of Timor-Lorosa’e in 2021 as the top student in her cohort. Her academic achievements include placing third in the National Competition for Outstanding Young Researchers in Law, organised by the National Institute of Science and Technology of Timor-Leste (INCT-TL), and second in a Scientific Debate in Law organised by the Faculty of Law of the National University of Timor-Lorosa’e.
Ana also holds a postgraduate qualification in Maritime Studies from the National Defence Institute of Timor-Leste, completed in cooperation with Universidade Católica Portuguesa — Porto. Her international legal training includes an Intensive Course in Maritime Mediation at the University of Coimbra, the ASEAN Law Academy Advanced Programme, and the inaugural CIL–NUS Academy of International Trade, delivered by the Centre for International Law at the National University of Singapore.
She is currently a Master’s candidate in Legal and Civil Sciences (Ciências Jurídico-Civilísticas) under an academic cooperation programme between the National University of Timor-Lorosa’e and the University of Coimbra, Portugal.
Experience
Ana’s legal experience includes internships with the Civil Division of the Dili District Court and the Business Registration and Verification Service (SERVE, I.P.). She also served as a Liaison and Communications Officer for an internationally supported technical assistance programme focused on promoting a gender-responsive judicial system and advancing legal and policy reform in Timor-Leste.
Her broader professional experience includes roles as a Programme Officer and as a media and communications specialist with international agencies and local non-governmental organisations. She has also contributed as an interpreter and cultural guide for a Columbia University master’s-level research project conducted in Timor-Leste.
